The Illinois Police Officers Memorial Committee (IPOMC) was established in 1985. Our monument in Springfield, Illinois bears the names of the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities. Every year on the first Thursday of May, we hold a ceremony to pay tribute to fallen officers and their families. We are grateful to all our contributors who have helped us keep these memories alive.
In 1985 members of five police organizations determined there was a need to honor and recognize Illinois Police Officers killed in the line of duty. These five organizations were the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Police Association, Illinois Sheriff’s Association, and the Illinois Police Protective & Benevolent Association. This was the beginning of the Illinois Police Officers Memorial Committee.
Through a great deal of collaboration and dedication, the first Illinois Police Officers Memorial Ceremony was held in May 1985. The interfaith service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church (2nd and Monroe) and the Ceremony took place on the east steps of the Capitol Building.
As the years have gone by, the Ceremony has evolved and grown. In continuing our mission of honoring Law Enforcement Officers and K9s who have given their lives in performance of their duty, the IPOMC also strives to support and honor the Family Survivors of each of our fallen. While it is a volunteer organization, each member takes great care and pride in ensuring that every officer’s sacrifice and legacy lives on.
